Page for each reading. Total of 2-2.5 pages
Centered and 1x spaced: Title Author
st Paragraph: Author’s thesis (argument) as you understand it. ALL quotes from the material MUST be appropriately cited (use MLA please. See the Perdue Owl website if you’re unsure about this). I do not want a string of quotes here. I want you to summarize the work in your own words.
nd Paragraph: The conversation or debate the author is entering. The specific intervention the author is making.
rd Paragraph: The ways in which this reading connects to other readings in the course thus far. The specific ways in which this reading connects with larger question the course is asking.
th Paragraph: Critical Response: What does the author’s argument make you think about? This could connect to something personal in your own life, it might connect to larger questions you are thinking about yourself. What does the piece make you think about, wonder about? How do you position this work vis-à-vis your own experience? Tread carefully here. I am not looking for a superficial slap-dash treatment of the author’s ideas, but rather a thoughtful account of what it prompts you to think or ask about. For example, maybe it prompted a conversation with friends/family/co-workers etc. One way to think about this paragraph is to imagine yourself in an actual conversation with the author of the piece. What might you say to her/him to indicate respectful engagement with her/his ideas?
