The purpose of this assignment is to analyze how conformity, obedience, and helping behaviors are depicted in our popular culture. Below you will find a list of movies that involve various aspects of conformity, obedience, or helping behaviors discussed in Chapter 2. Please select one movie, watch it, and analyze how one of the themes from Chapter 2 is depicted by the main characters. Your critique should examine the relationship between the media representation of conformity, obedience, or helping behaviors and the empirical research you have read on the same topics. You should note points of agreement and points of disagreement. Try to stay focused on a single issue (e.g., anticonformity) and not give a summary of the film. References should be made in your paper to the exact page numbers of the text that support your arguments. Sometimes you will find that the media presentations are consistent with the empirical research, and sometimes you will not find empirical support for the way these issues are depicted in our popular culture. This analysis should make some of our culturally accepted myths about conformity, obedience, or helping behaviors more obvious. General typing instructions include: one to two pages, typed, Times New Roman 12 pt., double-spaced, 1-inch margins, and no spelling errors.
Lars and the Real Girl A very off-beat film about a man who believes a sex doll is his romantic partner. Of interest to this chapter are the ways his family and friends begin to accept and conform to his belief.
